Hi all, please bear with me as I'm a PC guy trying to solve a computer-illiterate iBook user's problem. She can't open TIFF files through the double-click; there's no icon associated with them. When I open File Exchange, I get an error message: "Can't open the File Exchange preferences file." And though the TIFF association is set (to QT Picture Viewer), no icon change. The file-translation tab of the menu is disabled, too.

From inside QT Picture Viewer, she can open a file, but she says she only gets a first page, and can't see the rest. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You could try rebuilding the desktop.

Hold down Alt + Command when you reboot the machine. After it has loaded the last extension it will ask if you would like to rebuild the Desktop. Select OK.

Files on the mac are 'associated' with the last program that modified them. Graphics Converter is shareware, and should handle TIFFs I love everyone til they prove otherwise, sadly some prove otherwise SO quickly

The file '..:System Folder:preferences:File Exchange Preferences' is almost certainly corrupt.

To prove: move the file onto the desktop, restart and try opening File Exchange again.

To solve: replace from backup or copy from another Mac with the same rev of MacOS.
