File association for one file

For some unknown reason, we are using Access 2 for only 1 Access database. All other databases are being run out of Access XP. I have been tasked with converting the database to XP and am in the testing phase.

I put a shortcut on the user's desktop (so she could try it out) of the new database. I opened it up to ensure it was working properly and it opened in Access 2. I reassociated it to XP and it opened great.

Here is the problem. The check box must have been checked to "Always use this program to open these files" because now the old database tries to open in Access XP. Not a big problem for me or you but this user only uses desktop shortcuts. I have a work around but I would like to re-associate this file with Access 2. When I try, it just goes back to XP.

How can I associate this file back to Access 2. I have event tried associating all .mdb files back to Access 2 but it is not on the list and when I browse to the executable it won't accept it, it only accepts Access XP.

This might work. Can't tell you for sure. Locate the Access 2 file, then "Shift + Right Click". There should be an "Open With" option. Go to Choose Program and select Access 2. Note the "Always use this program etc. " check box. If it's not checked, try checking it.

Only thing I can think of is that it would associate all databases with Access 2 on the local machine, in which case, you could repeat the above step and revert back to XP.

My thought is that if you associate that one file with Access 2, it will always open with Access 2. If XP is as smart as we all hope, it will see that any other data base can't be opened with Access 2 and will then be automatically opened with Access XP. :) Good luck!

I tried this but Access XP seems to be smart enough to realize that it is more current than Access 2 and it will not allow me to choose Access 2 over it. I cannot associate anything to Access 2.

However, I was able to create a shortcut to Access 2 and modify the shortcut target so that it opened the database immediately after it opened the program. Thanks for the assist!
