I am building a new File and Print server for my network. It is a Server 2003 OS, and my question is this... Do I want to do have to do a DCPROMO on this server? I am throwing that out there since I really do not want this server to do any of the Domain Controller work.. I want it to be just file and print....

Anyway, thanks in advance....

A Windows 2003 does not need to be a Domain Controller to act as a file/print server. In fact, (others may correct me if I am wrong) I believe that the default 2003 install comes with everything you will need to run as a file/print server.

Thanks for the quick response... let me follow up and ask if I would need the server to be upgraded via dcpromo if I wanted to use DFS?

You will have to use the Computer Manager and select the role of Print Server, then install the necessary printer drivers before you can setup a managed printer.

You do not need to run DCPROMO to run DFS. In fact DFS is enabled out of the box and can be found under Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Distributed File System.
