Field Explorer unavailable in CR report accessed via SAP

Using Crystal Reports IX
and SAP BW 3.5
My field explorer in Crystal Reports is faded out (not available) when I first open a report through SAP.

I then leave that report open and then open a another report not through SAP. This second report could be just one of the sample reports that comes with Crystal Reports.

If I then pop back to the original report, the field explorer is available.
