Field can not be summarized

If I have a field that won't let me do a sum({fieldname}) because of the message saying "The field can not be summarized," how can I add them up so that I can subtract them from something else?

I've tried everything I know of in Crystal to get it to work, so I hope you advanced people can tell me something I'm missing!

what is the datatype of the field? If it is number held as a string you will need to convert it first.
