INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
STOP: 0X0000007B
Abstract:
When installing Win2k or Win2k/AS on systems with an Apollo MVP3 chipset problems are experienced. If the HD is enabled in the BIOS then the installer cannot write to the drive correctly (nonspecific problems are reported by the installar). If the HD is disabled in the BIOS then the installer will copy the files to the drive at an extraordinarily slow rate. If the HD is disabled in the BIOS and Western Digital's EZ-BIOS is installed on the drive the files will be copied at a tolerable rate. Either way BIOS recognition of the HD must be reenabled to boot from the drive. Attempts to boot produce INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE errors. It is easily noted that problems are to be expected when installing using one hardware configuration and booting with another. Unless Microsoft decides to include the correct drivers for the VIA Apollo MVP3 bus master on their install CD this cannot be resolved.
Method:
FIC PA-2013 mobo
w/ VIA Apollo MVP3 chipset
Factory clean Western Digital 40gb HD
Install Win2k/AS directly OR
Use DOS FDISK to create a single 5 gb part.
Install Win98SE on part(0)
Install Win2k/AS on a second 5 gb part
Description:
Win2k/AS is unable to modify the drive partitions with the BIOS controlling the HD. Win2k/AS is unable to format a new drive partition with the BIOS controlling the HD. After BIOS control has been disabled then Win2k/AS is able to access the drive for installation.
In this situation the boot.ini file will be on the first partition (FAT32) and the Win2k/AS install will be on the second partition (NTFS). The boot.ini file will contain a timeout=0 and two bootable operating systems. The lines referring to Win2k/AS will be prefixed with signature() which indicates a SCSI device. This is an artefact of installing Win2k with no BIOS HD control. This causes problems as IDE hard drives are actually being used.
Fix:
Install Debian 2.2 on a third partition. Cease using Windows.
But seriously...
Upgrade all Debian packages and upgrade to a linux-2.4.x kernel. Use Debian 2.2 to modify the boot.ini file on the Win98 partition. Change the signature(somestuff) to multi(0). Change the timeout to something reasonable (60) and boot to Win98.
From
Open an MS-DOS prompt.
expand d:\i386\atapi.sy_ c:\atapi.sys
It would be nice to copy this file directly to the WinNT partition but Win98SE doesn't recognize NTFS. Boot the machine into Debian 2.2 and mount the Win98SE and Win2k/AS partitions. Copy atapi.sys from the Win98SE partition to \winnt\system32\drivers\atapi.sys on the Win2k/AS partition.
It should be all set to go.
