Hi,

On our current system we have a few switches in one building and a few in another, with the switches in the same building attached with standard uplink cables.

Now in order to make the connection between the 2 buildings we have a fibre cable going into the back of 1 3Com switch in each building. Now I believe the fibre connection isn't standard and fibre transeivers were added to make the connection (before my time).

My question is:

We need to replace the 3Com switch on one side with an HP Switch we have. What I would like to know if if I get a fibre transeiver for the HP switch will it connect fine to the 3Com switch like a patch cable, or will a 3Com only connect to another 3Com switch over this port ?

Also does anyone know how fast the connection between 2 switches with a fire connection is ?

Sorry for so many questions or if it's poorly structured, I'm not very experienced with this kind of connection before.

The fiber should connect without a problem. Just make sure the RX on one end is connected to the TX on the other end and vice versa. If both switches are talking the same language (IP or whatever) it should be find.

You'll need to make sure the module in the 3COM is the same "speed" as the module in the HP switch. In other words, if the 3COM module is 100Base-FX, the HP switch will need to talk 100Base-FX also.

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping it would be along those lines, the fibre adapter on the 3Com is 100fx and I think I know the right HP transeiver to use now aswel.

Thanks again
