I have a customer that has three buildings, these are all inter-connected via Fibre Optic, they all converge in one building and connect to a US Robotics device which i can only describe as a Fibre Optic Hub/Switch (This then connects to the traditional CAT5 wiring). What is the correct name for this device?? What is a modern day equivalent? Any info would be great guys.....

Cisco makes switches that accept a variety of modules, like fiber and copper, gigabit, and their FireWire-type connections. This is just a switch. jeff moss

I've dealt with fibre switches before-linking two switches together but this USR device was accepting 8 fibre cores i think,at the other end of each fibre was a switch also.i've only seen switches with 4 ports,do you have any model numbers?? TIA ;)

is an older Nortel product (widely available on ebay as well) that starts with 4 100baseFX ports and can expand to 12, it can do gig and copper as well.

is their larger more modern solution, the picture is wild overkill to your problem as described, but there is a 3 slot version as well. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

The same applies with the Current HP switch range, you can add modules of 24RJ ports, 3 Fibre ports, 8 GB ports etc.

I believe they are still just called normal switches (but with Fibre Transievers).

Thanks for the help & quick help guys-great job! Dave

are we talking about a media converter ?
it takes the light pulses and converts them to electric pulses and vice versa i beleive these are availble with 4 ports.

you CAN get a multiport media converter and run the copper sides into a switch, (may need to turn off auto negoitate, as few fiber protocols suport it) they also make fiber optic switch modules and stand alone fiber optic switches. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Has anyone used this USR product though?? It was about 4U in height,i couldn't get the model number as it was rack mounted(only thing oin the fron was USR Total Switch) it had ST Fibre ports & one 9 pin comm port.......

Information about the Total Control networking line can be found at US Robotics as an entity no longer supports the product the parent has taken it over.

call me stupid but which section??maybe the US site is different to the one i've looked on,TIA ;)

Sorry, I followed the link again and it brought me to another division of 3com. It looks like the TOTALswitch was retooled when 3com purchased USR into the Total Control 1000 and 5000 series. Here's a review of it from 97:

I can't seem to find any specs, though it looks like blackbox is making a modular setup called a TotalSwitch 6 that may be a reincarnation of the original USR device, not sure without seeing what you have.

I'm going to visit the site again & get the model number off this, thanks again ;) Dave

i'm afraid not,all it had on the front was 12 (IIRC) ST fibre ports & a 9 pin comm port-i'll get a picture & model number for you ;)
