hypertermed in and used the ipaddrset

ethernet ip address 10.40.64.192
ethernet subnetmask 255.255.252.0
fibre channel ip address 10.40.64.193
fibre channel subnetmask 255.255.252.0
gateway address 10.40.64.1

reset switch - check config and all ok

i cannot ping on either address though
any thoughts

I assume you can connect to it via a cross-over cable, since you were able to connect to it. It's when you connect it to the regular LAN you cannot access it.
If the above assumption is valid, what I think you're seeing is the auto-negotiate not working. On more ocassions than not I've had to hardcode the ethernet setting to whatever suits your LAN gear. There's no need to go 100/Full, the etherenet port is only for management.
Try the command:
ifmodeset "fei0"
and select what suits you. You'll need to reset again, and you should be all set.

i was connected via a cisco switch when using the 10.77.77.77
i just changed my pc to static and went to 10.77.77.78

i then connected the serial cable changed the ip addresses and couldnt connect
i then tried a cross over cable just from management port to laptop to see if it was autonegoiate
