I know I've seen this question awhile ago, but I'll ask it again. Can I extend a 4400 or MLX set over fiber as an OPT, or is it still only good for analog sets??

I am not aware of any hardware that will convert an MLX/4400 etc type system phones to connect to a multiplexer/channel bank to connect to a hi-speed connection like T1 or fiber for any Avaya product. You can only connect via copper. This seems to be true for most system or proprietary sets. Except for some Nortel P phones someone makes a channel unit for a D4 channel bank, but I might be thinking of ISDN.....

Hope this helps!

Jim,

I had a feeling this couldn't be done. Too bad, I see alot of uses for this kind of product.

Thanks,
Mike

In the old days there was a NEAT product to connect ATL Sets back to a Legend with fiber.

It was costly, but, although it was originally developed for SECURE LOCATIONS, it made a PERFECT IROB.

How many sets? How much do you want to spend? Can you get by with using fiber to T1 converters at each end and 2 Magix systems with T1 cards in each?

Now, that's a thought.

Also, I've never heard of this being done, but the MLX is some type of ISDN.

Wouldn't it be a little "fragile" to have the fiber dangling over a desk from the phone?

TTTommy,

I'm in an airport setting with 6 to 8 ground locations that have fiber to them, from the tower, but no copper. I know I can get the analog sets using fxs/fxo but wanted to see if I had any other options.

You may want to check out MCK.com for the Extender PBXgateway and the Extender 4000. This can extend Merlin Magix 44xx sets over a managed IP network or via point to point protocols. Just kind of pricey for your application.

40 years in the business and counting.

memphisribs,

I called MCK and they can extend the 4400 series but not the MLX sets !! They have an 8 port unit that gets installed at the Magix end and a single port unit off the fiber at the remote end. He's sending me the cost per unit and dealers in my area.

Good tip, thank you.
