Does anybody know how a Nortel mics fiber station module can be remotely run over multimode fiber optic cable other then using the mck communications module extender? I’ve looked at the Mck communications Fiber optic module extender but the customer almost had a heart attack at the price(customer needs 2 units as he has 2 stations modules that need to be remotely setup). Is there a cheaper solution. Is it possible to use fiber optic transcievers.I know transcievers use ethernet packets but is it a possiblility or are there any other possible solutions?

dont do it over fiber do it over t1 and us e the other a digital station they come in i believe 8 port and 12 port and u use a t1

ONLY 17 WEEKS TILL SKI SEASON STARTS

Thanks for the reply. The promblem is that they have a 50 pr. feed but every time there is a power surge or lightling strike things get blown up(and yes we have all the protection in place). The only other alternative is to use the exsting fiber optic feed. The station modules are on the same site they are not going to a different site just to another area about 800 feet from the ksu.Distance is not the issue but using copper tends to cause to many problems .Fiber seems like the best way to go.Can a t-1 be used over the fiber somehow? Any ideas?

Just install the mck fiber extenders. The price ($1300ish canadian or $975ish US) is not bad and they work very well.

You could also use MCK extender 6000s and ethernet media converters however your cost will be a lot more.

I agree about the cost of the MCK. Cost should be the least of your worries if "things get blows up" every time you have lightning. It sounds like your earth ground needs to be looked at. Maybe your inline protection is not good enough. Might need to step them down a size or something. If the fuse doesn't blow when the lightning comes, it's not the right kind. It sounds like it is not sending the surge to ground either. When it's working right, it should re-direct the surge or blow the fuse link.

remember that that "___ish" price is for the set of extenders not each.

as far as lightning protectors I have had good luck with the TransGuard (parallel wired) lightning protectors (norstar phones need the 57 volt protectors).

Thanks for all the replys. As stated in a earlier post we have very high end lightling protectors (they only work at a high voltage level) and then they have the lower voltage protectors. Promblem is any kind of surge or lightling (the customer is a manufacturing plant)strike and boom out goes the lower voltage proctectors.I've looked at replacing the 50 pr. but i think its the high voltage power line that is the promblem ,the cable is old and it seem to short out and effects anything that is near to it.Big $$$$$ to replace. It kind gets tiring changing protectors twice a month.I geuss i will have to get the customer to bite the bullet and buy to modular extenders.Thats $2600.00 cnd ouch !I wish there was a simpiler way to do this.

sorry for not specifying earlier, the transguard are not reset/replace they just bleed off the excess to ground and then are back in operation.

Thanks for the info .I will check out the transguard protectors for sure.It looks like at this point the customer has decided to go with the Mck modular extender solution. You can't beat fiber for reliability and wireless has to many promblems.

So... HNM!,... I have the same situation. How did you solve yours???

We installed 2 of the mck fiber optic extenders. They are good but don't like power outages. If the power goes out you have to reset them at both ends. That can be a real pain. They work real well other then that.
