fiber connected laser network device drops

We have 2 Omnilink laser heads which are connected via fiber to our 3com switches. On one side one of my co-workers remounted the laser head but did not remove the fiber while working on it. Now we experience 2-5 drops in connectivity per day but only for a 3-15 seconds. Is it possible to have damaged fiber which causes intermittant drops?
