Feeding a Merlin from an Adran Atlas 830 1

Hello all! I am a newbie so please be patient with me. I'm an electronic tech trying to fill some big shoes.

I have inherited a Merlin Legend 7.0 system which presently does not have any digital modules but I have two that I can use. One is a 100D and the other is a newer 100DCL (617S15).

Right now, there is an Adran Atlas 830 being used to supply some BRI circuits from two Sprint PRI circuits. But there are also a few FXS analog lines being supplied to the Merlin. Those lines are looped out of the Atlas via T1 (BZ8S and RBS) via an Adran TA750. (is that a "channel bank"?)

The analog lines coming from the TA750 don't (and won't allow any sort of caller ID) to be transmitted to the Merlin and it locks up occasionally. I'd like to eliminate it altogether.

I have two options that have occurred to me so far:
1.) Buy a few Octal FXS modules to slide directly into the 830
2.) Use one of my 100 Merlin modules.

I have read where the position of the 100D card can create some problems. Currently, I have two Merlin backplanes populated with 9 modules. The last three are 408 LS/GS ID modules and I'd really like to avoid reprogramming the Merlin so adding the 100 to the end would be preferable. I also have a few newer 391C1 power supplies to help the system and my 007MLM Voice Mail is in position 6.

The Adtran dial plan offers what seems to be a pretty wide variety of signalling methods.

Can anyone tell me if I'm barking an entirely wrong tree or is this something that's done every day?

If it's a good idea, any basic pointers on getting this set up?

Thanks a bunch!

Oh yeah, the BRI circuits don't go to the Merlin. They feed other non-related equipment.

Thanks again.

The "position problem" when using a 100-D Module in the Legend, is caused by certain models of the 100-D being placed to the RIGHT OF an 016 ANALOG (T&R) Module. If there are none of these, there should be no problem. If there are some, DON'T MOVE ANYTHING AROUND without giving us more info. With a LEGEND, moving Modules around can cause many many problems.

Worked on this last night and I have the T1 feeding the Merlin now and it seems to be working. By that, I mean I have dial tone on the lines configured in the Adtran 830 which I have programmed to appear on a Merlin phone and I can call into that phone. Likewise, I can access that line on the Merlin and dial out. I have been successful in getting signaling to work properly with the Adran User Term dial plan interface settings on LOOP START.

I'm now experimenting with getting ANI displayed as CID on the Merlin and have problems with it. As I said, Loop Start is working OK but if I set the Adran to Feature Group D as detailed in the second document below, the line rings constantly on the Merlin and I don't get a dial tone. (Available signaling choices in the Adtran User Term dial plan are E&M Immediate, E&M Wink, Ground Start, Loop Start and Feature Group D.)

Merlin is set to match the T1 output of the Adtran (Type: T1, Frame Format: ESF, Suppression: B8ZS, Signaling: Robbed Bit, Channel Unit: Foreign Exchange).

Should I be able to make the Merlin work with Feature Group D to get CID displayed on the MLXs?

I am going by these two documents:
General PDF which seems to indicate I can accomplish this:
Step by step procedure for doing so:

Thanks!

The Merlin Legend can only use NI1, but if that was an issue, I doubt that the circuit would even be in service. As far as CID, the LEGEND can only provide NUMBER over PRI. (Not name)

The SWITCH TYPE the LEGEND likes is 5ESS - however, it can use DMS-100 or 4ESS as well. (But I think your best bet for CID is 5ESS.

Thank you merlinman.

Yes, number is all I really want. Name would be nice but not needed...

Trying to clarify your comment... When you say the LEGEND can only provide number over PRI, do you mean it can only provide number if fed with PRI? I ask because the Adtran document suggests feeding the CPE with a T1 circuit.

It sounds here like you are suggesting feeding the Merlin with PRI instead of T1. Correct? I believe the Adran is capable of outputting either T1 or PRI so I could try this.

Thanks.

" do you mean it can only provide number if fed with PRI?........

Yes, that's what I meant.

And yes, "feed" it with PRI.

The picture your attachments show look exactly like the units the Providers install that I use to connected Legends to PRI.
