Looking to move my hosted email services from Exchange 2000 to Linux. Although new to Linux, I have nearly 10 years of sys admin experience.

Downloaded and installed Fedora Core 6 (Zod - Final release)and Postfix-2.3.3-2 (via yum). Both installed with no problems and no errors.

I configured only basics in the main.cf file (mydomain, myhostname, mynetworks...etc)

I turned off and disabled sendmail:
# chkconfig --level 35 sendmail off
# chkconfig --level 35 postfix on

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail stop
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/postfix start

My problem:

I cannot connect to Postfix externally. I can telnet and open port 25 on the server itself, but I cannot telnet or connect via Outlook externally. I have tried everything as it applies to ports and firewalls; I have disabled everything: the firewall and SELinux and still cannot connect to Postfix externally...

Any ideas?

My gratitude ahead of time...

When you say connect do you mean connecting over SMTP? Or do you mean something like POP3 or IMAP protocols? If so, you need another package for client services.

Verify by issuing [blue]netstat -nap[/blue] as root and look for listening ports 110 (pop3) and 143 (imap). If these ports not listening you need a package like IMAP to allow clients to view their mail.

Have Fun! [afro2]
