Hello

I installed the rpm for synaptic and the dependencies. When I try to run synaptic from a command prompt I get this message:

(synaptic:2510): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

I installed it as the root user and am currently allowing log in by root. I am just setting up the server and will change the login when it is ready.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

synaptic is a GUI frontend to the apt package management utility. You need to run synaptic from inside X. Also, you'll need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add this line "rpm fedora/linux/4/i386 core updates freshrpms extras" without the quotes for apt to be of any use.
