Hi everyone, I used to upgrade my pc from WinME to XP, unfortunately, it fails, it cannot continue the setup and need to be shutdown or else my pc might be destroyed - thats it says(weird!). It writes something that I dont understand, it says there something bad in my fixed drive. So I decided to reformat it but before that I backed my files to driveD then proceed FDISK. When I go to FDISK, there is an error message appeared, it says, "Unable to access device 1". I thought my hardrive fails but when I used to access my backup files in drive D its in there (so my hardrive is ok). So, I decided to format my C without going to fdisk. After formatting I started fdisk again, again same error appears. I tried to reboot my PC and see if it detects my hard drive, and it detects. Now, I'm totally confused of whats going on my pc. Is there anyone that have come up with this problem or any suggestions?

So you have one drive with 2 partitions? Is the second one an extended partition?

Did you start the upgrade from within ME? Have you tried since, but booting from the XP install CD?

From a win98/ME boot floppy, can you run scandisk on the C: drive?

You could try visiting drive manufacturer's site and downloading utility to check out your drive (they nearly all have one).

You may need to use both of these .

Freeware .
WIPE OUT : as the name implies, this utility will absolutely WIPE your hard drive. For those
times when an industrial strength cleaner is needed to remove any pesky files Fdisk may have
left behind. A readme file is included in the zip file. WARNING...WIPE OUT will remove ALL data
from the Hard Drive.

DIRECTIONS

1- Unzip file
2- Copy WIPEOUT to a Win9x boot disk
3- Boot with Win9x disk
4- At the A:\> type "wipeout c: /nq /np" (no quotes)
/nq = no queries - you will not be asked if you are sure.
/np = no partitions - this will overwrite the MBR

Press Enter .

Now run fdisk to set up partitions .
When done reboot & format .

-------------------------------------------

Delpart.exe From NT 3.51, this utility can delete extended NTFS,
Lilo, and just about any other type of partition .
DELPART is a DOS based utility that will remove NTFS partitions from
hard drives. FDISK is unable to remove some types of NTFS partitions.
DELPART can wipe clean a hard drive, then you can use FDISK to create
partitions normally.
