We have had our dedicated web server with the above config for about 5 months. Since day 1 sending emails has been quite slow from Outlook. It usually takes about 1 minute for outlook to say it has stopped sending a 3-5 line text email, which is quite unacceptable. Ideas?

Can you figure out which part of the process is slow? i.e. is it resolving the IP address of the mail server, authenticating, or actually transmitting the data that takes the longest?

I would use tcpdump or wireshark to monitor the network traffic from such a connection to try and answer the above... and if your email server can be put in debug mode the logs it produces may also give you some clues.

I did a google search and came up with editing /etc/xinetd.d/smtp_psa

server_args = -Rt0 /var/qmail/bin/relaylock /var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd /var/qmail/bin/smtp_auth /var/qmail/bin/true /var/qmail/bin/cmd5checkpw /var/qmail/bin/true

You just add the "-Rt0", save and restart xinetd. Works great now. Email sending is almost immediate!
