Hi fellow techies,

I've just installed FC5. When I go to Add/Remove programs.
Package Manager says it is trying to retrieve software information and then after a while it crashes.

Any help is appreciated!

BTW, I know that link talks about YUM, but once you get it setup then the Add/Remove Software functions will work.

Add/Remove software is a GUI for yum in FC5.

I must say that my repo were not only not setup correctly, they were empty.

Thee must be some issue with FC5, yet once setup properly either through yum or the GUI everything seems to work pretty well; one day maybe yum will be as good as apt-get....

boh..

A part from jokes, I also found that if you need uncommon packages to be installed, then you better configure some external repos in your yum.conf file. The redhat ones infact will not provide you with much. Definitely you must enable red-hat extras. I found FreashRPMS to be a good repo for other nice utilities (DVDRip, Krusader, rar etc...)

Hi LawnBoy

I tried the following commands on the terminal:
cd /etc
mv -f yum.conf yum.conf.bak
wget
Now, install my yum configuration (Updated 9 May 2006), using this command:
rpm -Uvh
BUT the commands timed out, and was unable to complete its task.
I don't think its an internet connection issue as I tried the same urls on the firefox browser and they work fine.

What could be the problem?

Please help!

Did you perform the commands as root?
On the command line, type
Code:
su -
and then enter the root user's password. Then try the commands again.

Probably, your rpm database had corrupted.
You can try this command to build the rpm db again :

# rpm --rebuilddb

That would help you to get rpm db back....

Cheeers....:)

Hi guys,

I logged in as root from the start.
Here's the exact error message:
Resolving Temporary failure in name resolution.

Any solutions will be highly appreciated
