OK first things first. I know this is old technology but it's what we have.

Platform: Older than dirt Dell server, Win 2K server, brooktrout ISA 2 port card, directly connected loop-start analog lines. Used for outbound faxes only

Situation: The phone lines test OK, the software recognizes both ports, but one continually fails all outbound calls. The calls fail over to the good line, but...

Desired state: both ports working as they should.

Any suggestions where to start?

How are you testing the lines? Are they connected directly to POTS lines provided by LEC or do they go thru phone system. On the port that fails can you switch the line connected to that port with the working port? If after you switch lines and same port has problem then most likely the fax board is defective.

Technicians often forgets to ask what has happened just before someone got a problem with the Phone System or Computers. Your problem is your Fax Server.
Sometimes it is the carrier (CO) that has the problem.
But sometimes it can be in-house.
Recently we had a similiar problem, because an electrician had disconnected the grounding cable from the Phone System (PBX). All lines were noisy, because of this.
Grounding for the Fax Server should alo be checked.
Using ferrite cores on all internal and external lines reduces the noise level (if any).

Just POTS lines no PBX or anything fancy like that. We've done some additional trouble shooting and have determined it to be the card...that we just had the service provider replace.

Back to the drawing board.

What software are you using?

Take Care

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

LightningFax is the software.

Did some testing Friday. The software is able to detect the card and that it should have two ports, and we tested both lines. Narrowing it down to the card itself. We've determined the 2nd port has failed, fortunately the software ques the faxes for the line on the first port.
