Been using the fax software that came with my imac for 2 yrs and suddenly the extension doesn't load at start up (red x) and I get a warning that the driver must be placed in the drivers folder which it is already. All I did prior to this is run Norton disk software before I optimized (defragged).
Here's the kicker... I tried everything to resove this short of os replacement (os9.2) still no help. I used the install software to remove the program, zapped the pram, rebuilt and replaced desktop started with ex. off the whole bit. Then it happened. I formatted, initialized and zeroed out the HD. Zapped the pram again for good measures and even reset the machine (side button). Installed os 9 and installed the fax software and restarted. That's right... a red X over the extension. Go figure! Q: Am I overlooking something?

Some considerations:
Sometimes it's helpfull to delete the preferences only.
Did you check for updates of faxstuff?
Have you installed the latest firmware?
Is the modem setup correct?
Try to delete the preferences first and reboot. You can also delete the finder preferences.
You can also check if there isn't an extensionconflict. Adding a space before the extension names can help to load it first but be sure the Extension manager is still the first to load! Put another character (like a #) for the extension so it loads as last. Also verify if the extension si actually in the extensions folder. To find an extension conflict you go to the extension manager and disable half of it and restart, if its still the same enable again half of it, if not disable the half you first enable and try the other half, try to find the extension that causes your extension to not load or the one who's probably diabling it.
It's also possible some control pannels causing the faxstuff not to load correctly.

All fixed... Seems external storage devices need to be unplugged if this happens and restart. Then plug back in. Simple somtimes is the least obvious. I needed a cleaning so it didn't matter. Thanx for the help.
