I want to get rid of an analog FAX line and use one of my DIDs for FAX. I have an Analog Terminal Adapter that tested OK on my line sitting on my desk. I hooked up a regular phone and was able to make and receive calls.

1. Does anyone have any tips on setting this up? I'm not sure how to proceed. Do I setup a fax line as I usually do for a handset? Should I plug in a handset first to the jack? What are common settings I should use? Obviously I don't want to fwd the call to voicemail after 4 rings like I do with a voice line.

2. After testing the ATA on my desktop, and plugging my handset back in, my speed dials are all different. To clarify, I didn't change jacks--I unplugged my Norstar handset plugged in the ATA and an analog phone, made some calls, then unplugged the ATA and plugged Norstar handset back in. The way it was.

Thanks everybody.

Buy changing to a different device then back it defaulted the buttons on your phone.
Now for the ATA. Yes it can be used for a fax by programing it just like a phoneby adding a DID to it, but you have to connect it to an open port and jack.

Interesting on the defaulting. This might be a useful tool if I want to default someone's handset. Plug in an ATA then plug there phone back in.

As for setting up a fax line, should I plug a phone into it first and get calls working in and out? Then plug the ATA and FAX machine in?

Plug in the ATA
Program it for:
Access to Poll
2 intercom keys
Prime line= Pool specified
Hotline to External and add a Pause (F78).

Test

With set relocation off, as appears to be the case in your office, anytime you plug in a different model set (not just an ata), button mapping will default.

I guess I never looked at that as a "tool", but I suppose it could serve its purpose.

The ata plugs into a port/jack by it self and plug the port into the jack port and the fax into the ata phone port.

Well, this is a project that I delayed for a little while, but I'm ready to revisit. Today I punched down the wiring, sandwiched the ATA device between the fax and wall jack. When I hit the "hook" button on the machine, i hear a dial-tone. I cannot seem to dial out however. Doesn't matter which number I hit (our system is setup for 8 to dial out) I get a fast busy.

I haven't done any programming at curlycord suggested. After logging in, how would I program this:

Access to Poll
2 intercom keys
Prime line= Pool specified
Hotline to External and add a Pause (F78).

Not sure how to identify the line. I know where it punches down to the ksu, but that's it.

Well, curlycord meant Pool. (typo.) If you're trying to assign one of your DID's to this ext, then your line doesn't punch down anywhere. (It either comes in on your PRI, or through DID trunks, not one specifically.)

You are probably talking about where the extension terminates on the station block, which is the other half of the puzzle.

Beleive me, I'm not criticizing, but it really is important to understand the distinction.

My first question should probably be, have you access to installer programming?

RikRodgers, yes I can log into programming. I have assigned DIDs to handsets in the past, but I do it so infrequently, and I have time understanding fully what's going on, this is especially challenging. Thanks.

No problem. Under Lines, find a target line without rec. digits assigned, and program the appropriate digits for the fax. Assign the fax ext as prime, and change the busy setting from "to prime" to "busy tone".

I would also suggest changing the line name to "Accounting fax", or something appropriate. It'll make changes a little easier in the future.

Now go back to Terminals & Sets. Go to the fax extension, and under line assignment, program the line to appear and ring; press show at this setting to make sure the appearances are set to 1. Press heading, and next to pool access, and assign as is appropriate. Press heading and next to capabilities. Make sure cf no answer and cf busy are set to none.

That should be it- if I've missed anything, I'm sure someone'll jump in for me.

Thanks. Though I'm not sure how to match up where I've punched down the wires to a line or set. Is it easier to connect a handset first, and assign a DN to it? I've done that before.

After you've cross connected the fax jack to an available station port, plug a digital set into that jack.
When the digital phone you're testing with comes up, you can determine the dn by pressing f*0 and intercom. Provided you have set reloc disabled, that is your fax dn.

Is this the part you're having trouble with?

summary: I can receive, but can't dial out.

Yep, I wasn't sure if the only way to discover DN was to plug in a handset. I did this and got the DN. I plugged the ATA back in between the wall and fax.

I can call the DID I assigned to it from a completely outside phone line (my cell phone) and the fax will ring and pick up and i hear fax tones. A second concurrent call will give me a busy. So this is all good.

I still cannot send a fax however. I'm not sure what is missing. This fax has a "hook" button and I can hear the line over a speaker. I hear a dial tone. I can call other DN's. I cannot get an outside line. We must normally dial "8" and then the number and this gives me a fast busy.

I think I got it working. I matched the Line pool settings with our other lines:

PRI-A:Y
PRI-B:Y

I can dial out now. Is there a way to always dial for an outside line automatically?

and I wonder if that would do it. I don't know what that means though.
