My Hp Officejet 6110 multifunction includes a fully functional standalone fax machine, but it is not possible to manage, send, or receive faxes from the PC, without 3rd party software. HP recommends I use XP fax service, but I am wondering how I can tell the fax software to not use the modem in my PC but the modem in the Officejet. Any help would be appreciated.

That function is only supported on a shared fax printer installed on a Windows Server 2003, and Small Business Server 2003. The XP still would use the local FAX service, but using the printer as you describe would require its intallation on either of the above Servers.

Thanks for the quick reply. So I'm wondering if there is any way to manage my Officejet faxes from my computer? I could do it with my old Officejet 610, so it seems that I could do it from my new one - they both work the same way.

See the FAX specific section of the 'Unofficial Windows Printer and FAX FAQ' to see if there is any help:
I should note that there may be third-party utilities to better handle the FAX service than the native XP service. Particularly if the notion is just to have the incoming faxes printed. I believe WinFAXPro will do this, and a Google will find other choices.

I have found out that I need to connect a telephone cord from my OJ to the modem in my computer. Then I can set up my fax software and use the modem in my computer. I'll try it tonight but it sounds like it will work. Thanks again for all the responses.

Using DOT4 as the printer definition is as close as you can get, my opinion.

But sharing it as a FAX resource, use Third-Party tools. I know Txfink above meant well. But I stand by my original point: as a shared FAX device, there is no satisfactory answer unless a FAX device under the newer Server OS offerings of Microsoft.

I installed XP fax service last night and it seems to doing what I want it to do.

I am not sure I understand your last post. What is DOT4? Also, I am not sharing this fax device. All I want to do is to send, receive, and log faxes from my PC, using the same line that is attached to my OJ. I now seem to be able to do that with the XP fax service, although I will consider Winfax Pro, which I'm sure can do a better job.
