Hi,

Recently installed a fax modem (external) to SBS 2003 machine. Setup fax server successfully and had incoming faxes routing to email address.

However, started having issues with the server freezing and then rebooting? Have since disabled the fax server and all is OK again. Is there a fix of some description to combat this bug? Pity as receiving faxes via email was extremely usefull.

thanks in advance.

Is the modem on the Windows HCL? Have you tried looking for an updated driver. I am reading that installing a Standard Fax Modem Driver fixes alot of fax related issues with Server. I've seen where several people end up uninstalling the manufacturer driver and end up using Windows standard modem driver with no problems. First, uninstall the current driver for the modem via device manager. Next, go to Control Panel and open the Phone and Modem Options. Click the Modems tab and click the Add button. When the Install Modem (Add Hardware Wizard) launches put a check by 'Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list' and click next. The next page should display a page with a list of standard modem types. Select the standard modem type that corresponds to your modem (probably Standard 56k) and click next. Then just finish out the wizard to finish configuring the modem. See if that will work out for you.

thanks for the response.

i think this sounds like a solution, however i dont seem to be able to attach the standard driver to the USB modem. If i got thru the phone and modem option and create a new modem (which all works ok) it is as if the modem is virtual and therefore does nothing.

When i look in device manager i see the above mentioned standard modem, but also see underneath it the USB modem with the exclamation mark. I tried to install a new driver (standard type) via the device manager however it doesnt offer me the standard type list. Even tried to point it to windows/inf/ but to no avail.

tried to download the standard type modem file to use with the have disk, but this is hard to come by.

Any further suggestions? Would be great when this is up and running.

cheers

Problem solved.

Ended up getting rid of the the USB modem (Netcomm RaveXtra) and replacing with a US Robotics 3 Comm serial modem (re-conditioned), And so far no probs whatsoever.

Who would have thought that and outdated modem would do the trick, worst thing is that recently we threw out an old serial fax modem as we thought it was useless,

How wrong we were.

The SBS2003 fax service is great. we used to receive hard copy faxes, then scan to get on the system for filing/further use. Now we just check a public folder and the TIF file is there ready to go.

Thanks IllogicallyLogical for the response.

Hi,

I just came through many problems with faxes on another SBS server, long history.

This is just to say that the server here uses a US Robotics USB Modem, underneath says model 5633 It works like a charm.
