I am completely new to the telecom world and the Legend system, so forgive me if this is a basic question. The organization I volunteer for has 4 trunk lines. We have the basic 408 GS/LS-MLX, 008 MLX and 012 modules (as well as an unused 800 DID module).

Due to the limited amount of trunks, I want the line dedicated to the fax machine to be available in the group pool (currently 70) for outgoing calls only (i.e. we can use the line to call out but if all lines are busy except the fax line, the caller gets voice mail instead of the fax receive tone).

I tried wading through the manual, which makes me think we might need an additional module, but am still unclear. Can we do this with the existing hardware?

TIA,
Brian

Is the FAX machine a Tip/Ring station? Is the 012 card a Tip/Ring Card?

If so, put the FAX line in another pool (such as 890), add 890 to the ARS tables so that outbound calls go to pool 70, or if it is busy go to pool 890. Assign pool 890 to the FAX extension and give it immediate ring.

"(i.e. we can use the line to call out but if all lines are busy except the fax line, the caller gets voice mail instead of the fax receive tone)."

In regards to the above, if all lines are busy except the fax line, the caller is going to get a busy signal, not voice mail. If all the lines are busy, there are no more paths for the telephone company's central office to send you another call.

You may be familiar with other companys that go to voice mail when all lines are busy, but they're really using a "Call Forward on Busy" to an outside voice mail unit (probably telco based), with a huge incoming DID trunk group, so as not to be blocked for incoming.

Tommy,

Thanks for the help. I'll give it a shot. I'm glad that I don't have to do this for a living - looking at the PBX is like looking at a rats nest. Much easier to write code :).

After spending a day with Tommy's advice, everything works except immediate ring. Since I only have an old single line phone, I tried to program the feature thru WinSPM - Central Programming. I can assign it to a button, but that is it.

It concurrently rings at the operator and fax station. Is there a way to make it stop ringing at the operator station other than immediate ring?

Thanks,
Brian

Whenever you assign lines to pools then these lines get automatically mapped out as line buttons on the operator phone. This is an unfortunate default behavior of Merlin.

You can just assign the line button to something else right at the operator position or else use Telephone Programming function in WinSPM to assign this button for something else.

At the Operator extension:

FEATURE 00
Press the Fax Line Button
Press List Feature
Press Find Feature
Look for Ring Options
Press One Line
Press Enter
Press No Ring
Press Enter
Feature *00
