I need to setup a fax ext on one of our Merlins
We have a 016 Ring Gen 16 Basic Tel Sets card with only one port in use.

I think if I simply connect the port to the jack I'll get dialtone on it, but something tells me it won't be that easy. Any guidance would be appreicated.

Cross connect a analog port (016 card) to the jack. You'll have to dial 9 to get an outside line.

That's it?? I would have thought it more difficult. Thanks!

You may want to renumber it to capture a DID, if you have them, or you may want to assign a pool to it and set it as the first coice in the auto line select so you don't have to dial a 9 to get out.

It's for a modem, outbound only, so I am not concerned about the user having to dial 9.

I may have to split the jack for phone & modem. What about using a splitter? I would assume a 1-4 splitter on both ends?

You can assign it as a fax ext: Sys program-->exit-->Aux equip-->FAX-->Extension. This won't do to much, it will A:enable you to light a message waiting lamp to notify a fax was recieved and B: elimanate the double ring on transfered calls{ring, beep, beep}, just use your own sound effects. Other than that, it is of no use.
