I have some html file on our file server.
Can I use the favicon or it is working only on webservers?

because, after I am bookmarking the page, I have the "unknown" application icon in my favorits.

1. Is the file located in your root directory? Many people in error put it in a subdirectory e.g. /images. Should be in root, or same level as the html file.
I've also had issues where the ICO file was not created properly and had to recreate it.

2. Which browser are you using? I believe it only views for MIE5+. Going from memory on this, but hope it helps. Various browsers display it in various places, in addition to the location bar and favourites list.

the ico is in the root directory, I am using MIE6 and it was created with IconForge from favicon.com

Do you have any suggestions?

Uh, yes, just read your post again, looking for clues.
Question -- Do you have a webserver installed and configured on your network?

Obviously you are viewing the file, but it sounds to me like you may be viewing it via the browser, as a network or local file (as opposed to through a local web server configuration). In other words, you open the file to view it, you do not access it via a local url or IP number --- Yes?
