How do I go about creating one of these icon files and have it show up in IE or Mozilla? Here's what I do know - the image is 16px by 16px and is placed in the root directory of the web server.

That's it.

I've got CorelDraw 7 which their PhotoPaint software only has a filter for win3.1 style icon images. I thought it might work as a bitmap image, so I tried that and it won't display in the location bar. Also, I do know of many other sites that have favicon.ico files and they don't show up in my browsers either. Is there anything in the coding of the html pages that aid in making sure that icon is displayed?

Any aid is appreciated.

Chris,

That is incorrect.

There are ways to display a favicon without the user bookmarking the site and the favicon relates to the whole domain, not just the one page unless they have explicitly coded it that way.

Hope this helps Wullie

I got some useful info out of the favicon.com site and figured out a good deal. Using the Link tag I am able to have the icon appear in the address bar in Mozilla, but still not in IE. That site also said it's very difficult to force IE to place that icon in the address bar if you've previously visited that page and it's in cache, even if you clear out the cache...

Is there any *trick* to making them appear in IE's address bar?

Hi mate,

If you are using the Link attribute for a favicon, then it will appear in IE. You might not see it but it will be there for others.

Clear your cache, go into your recent folder and delete any cached pages in there, then if that doesn't work, try restarting.

Hope this helps Wullie
