Faulty Hard drive???

There are instances when I boot my computer, as Windows loads I hear a click in the hard drive (I'm quite sure it's from the hard drive) then the PC freezes. Then I'm forced to a cold reboot. This happens after 5-7 times I cold reboot then it's normal again. Of course, I run scan disk and errors are found probably because of the cold reboot.

Could this be a faulty hard drive?

PS
Specs:
Maxtor 5400 30gig hard drive

Sounds like the hard drive shutting down...

Andy.

When you can get it to boot, back up anything you need and replace the drive.

Disable power saving in the BIOS. Particularly hard drive spindown.

Sounds not good. In my opinion, I would take micker377's advice and backup your drive right now, before you try anything else. Don't bother with scandisk unless you can't copy off the files. If you have access to another computer, then download Maxtor's HD test utility and test the drive out.

I have had a lot of trouble with Maxtor's 30 GB drives, way more than any other size combined. Try a Samsung or a Seagate instead.

I don't know if this occured to anyone. I have an auxilliary fan that intakes air to improve ventilation. Whenever it's getting too cold due to my air conditioner the problem occurs. I think the reason why it returns to normal when I try to reboot 5-7 times is because the hard drive is starting to heat up. I remedied my problem by making sure that it is not too cold when I open my computer.
