Faulty CD/DVD disk Locks Computer

I placed a CD disk in my CD drive not knowing the disk was faulty, the CD drive did nothing and my computer locked up.
I used Ctrl/Alt/Del and still nothing happened.
I had no choice but to manually switch off the computer, remove the disk and restart.
A friend of mine experienced the exact same problem, when selecting Power DVD and the disk was a data disk.
While another person I know placed a CD disk in the drive thinking all was audio where it had a data file included, this caused the same problem.
Is there any time out adjustments to prevent this total lockup happening.
I would appreciate your advise.

If you right-click on the CD Drive and Select Properties, there is a tab called AutoPlay where you can configure what action XP takes each time a CD is loaded.

It has always been a problem with faulty CD's locking up a computer as long as I can remember, it might be that all the resources are used up by the system trying to fix the problem, therefore when the user chips in with his two cents worth, there is no room for his actions to be completed.

Thanks for the info.
I was aware of the Auto Play option, as it was not working previously and gave problems when changing disks as to updating to the new disk.
I switched it on in the registry.
I thought there may have been something in the registry I could change re the lockup.

Have a look in the Event Viewer, you'll probably find a few errors relating to a bad block on the CD drive, you might be able to locate some other relevant info in there too.
