Do you have a mouse-section in /etc/X11/XF68Config-4 ?
Post it!

And do you have a mouse?
PS-2, com-port, usb?
Optical? Scroll? How many buttons?
Something suspicious?

I'm not sure whether a mouse is obligatoric for X11.

seeking a job as java-programmer in Berlin:

I think VMware has its own psuedo mouse driver, you need to read the docs, but I think it emulates a PS/2.

With Fedora core 2.0 the configuration file for X seems to be /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Here is the mouse-section :

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection

I have a Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical Scroll.
Linux see it like a PS2 device ...

Thanks for your help ...

Here is the ServerLayout section :

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "Default Layout"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"

Thanks !!!!

Good point, Stefan. From what I recall, /dev/input is for USB devices, so make sure you have usbdevfs mounted, also.

Also, remember that this is VMware emulating a mouse, so even if your mouse is not USB the virtual machine may make it look like one to the operating system.

Hello,

I have found the problem.

I modify in the /etc/XF86Config file the section Mouse

Before :

Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/PS2"
Device "/dev/mouse"

After :

Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/PS2"
Device "/dev/input/mice"

And now X start without problem ...

Thanks ALL for your help !!!
