IBM Aptiva E Series 244 K6 350MHz (512KB) 192MB 6GB HDD IDE PCI/ISA Microtwr(3X4) ATI 32X CD 56K Win98

Problem has just started. Have not added any new hardware, have done some updating. "Microsoft Data Access Components" - "Microsoft Jet Database Engine 3" - "Microsoft Jet Database Engine 3.5" - "Microsoft Visual C++ 4.2 Run-time Files"

On trying to shut down I receive the following message:
Code:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C149C519 in VXD IDEVSD(01) + 00000919

Upon pressing "any key to terminate the current application" I receive the following message:
Code:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0177:BFF8836D

AT THIS POINT pressing "any key to terminate the current application" leaves the same window. I then use "Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart. It does. A vicious circle but no shutdown. I have to shut down manually.

Also, if the computer goes into stand-by I cannot restart it. Again have to shut down manually. This started at the same time.

I have been able to uninstall all of the above programs except "Microsoft Data Access Components" as it stops the uninstall stating that I do not have authority to uninstall. Strange but when it was going through installation process I received a message part way through that "This program has Performed An Illegal Operation-----" Details:

Code:
RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in

I closed the message and it continued installing. Could something to do with the RUNDLL32 file be causing this. This does seem to be the time this problem started.

I also tried Micosoft's Troubleshooter site for Shutdown problems. Excellent site for these types of problems but I went through their 8 or 9 steps and no fix for this one.

I should note that in Safe Mode it does Shut Down.

I have tried other forums with no answer. 1st time user to this one. Thank you for your time and consideration. Rocky

Step 1: Run a thorough scandisk to make sure there aren't any disk errors.

Step 2: Install MDAC again.

Step 3: Try uninstalling MDAC after you've rebooted.

As for standby, I'd recommend making the computer not standby until you resolve your problem :)

Cheers

Have ran ScanDisk, twice.

Re-installed MDAC as you suggested and received the same Rundll32 Error Message again during "Installing Componets". Continued as before.

Restart then tried to shutdown. Same messages on shutdown once again. Un-installed MDAC. Went smoothly this time. Restart then tried to shutdown. Same messages on shutdown once again.

Also have disabled standby. Thank you for your suggestions and time. It is appreciated. Rocky

Try upgrading your ALI IDE driver to the latest version and see if that fixes your problem, as there apparently are known fault problems with some older versions. If that doesn't work, go here and follow the procedure on removing the ALI PCI Bus master driver and going with the default windows driver. Be forewarned that this will hurt your drive performance.

I'm not sure what to say except ... IMPRESSED!! That attachment to download and install that ALI IDE driver not only did the trick but unless it's my imagination it put a extra engine under the hood also. You most certainly got my vote and great appreciation.
Just a note that this has been ongoing for 2 weeks and I found this forum only tonight. I had received responses from other forums but no answers. To nail it done so quickly, 1 .. 2 .. out .. excellent. Thank you ever so much.

Rocky
