Hello,

I am trying to install Windows XP from an Upgrade disc and get the following blue screen: A fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0028:00000017. The Current Application will be terminated.

Any ideas how to cope with this?

Thanks

From the KB:

SYMPTOMS
During Windows 98 Setup, you may receive the following error message:

A fatal exception 06 has occurred at :.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if an earlier version of McAfee's VirusScan (anti- virus software) or Norton AntiVirus is being loaded from the Autoexec.bat file.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, disable McAfee VirusScan or Norton AntiVirus. To do so, follow these steps:

Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Command Prompt Only.

At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

edit c:\autoexec.bat

Type rem and then a space at the beginning of the line that contains Vshield.exe.

If you are using Norton AntiVirus, type rem and then a space at the beginning of the line added by Norton AntiVirus.

Save and then close the Autoexec.bat file.

Restart your computer. Setup should continue.

People,

I looked at the Microsoft Website and found this solution before posting, I'm not running McAfee or Norton (or any virus software).

Any other ideas? How about reinstalling Win 98 and then XP?

You could try looking at bootlog.txt to see if it gives you any idea what is causing the error. You might be able to rename something and proceed with install.

Howdy:

Did you run the upgrade advisor BEFORE you tried the upgrade to make sure your system could handle XP?? Maybe you should as the error message is very indicative of a VERY incompatible video driver !!!

I did run the Xp Advisor before Upgrade and the report detailed my graphics card, USB controller and onboard sound as requiring 3rd party drivers. I assumed that I could install XP and then install the drivers.

I resolved the Fatal Exception problem by reinstalling Win 98, however when I come to install XP I progress through the installation until it is shown that 35 minutes remain, at this time the screen goes blank (I am told by the screen that there is no input) and I cannot do anything else. The only solution was to reset the machine and start again, this again leads to the black screen and nothing. There is no activity when the screen is blank.

I tried installing the drivers for the graphics card in Win98 which was successful, hoping this would resolved the hang problem, not to no avail.

Any futher ideas, I don't have a different graphics card to try. Should I try installing the XP drivers for the graphics card before installing XP.

Methinks you need a newer graphics card plain and simple.. Installijg the XP drivers on a Win98 system won't work either..

It is a new Graphics Card....it claims to be XP compatable and has XP drivers on the supplied disc. I'm assuming the original Fatal Exception was caused by a registry problem as this has not been an issue since I reinstalled Win98.

Any further ideas? Is the XP installation disc likely to be the cause?

Thanks,
