AIX FAST CONNECT is an IBM Product to implement SMB
protocol ( Windows ) in AIX. You can buy it as a feature of AIX( it is supported by IBM).

You can obtain the same functions installing a free product:
SAMBA;
you can download it from many sites as Bull, aixpds-library ( see links in rootvg.net ), and a powerful documentation is a dedicated IBM redbook .

Victor,

thanx for ur prompt reply I have heard about this package Samba and been to the web site I have downloaded about 4 version but they are all .exe files I am bit aprhensive of just running these programs as I don't know which version of samba to run as I have no documentation what so ever on the product I am currently running AIX version 4.3.2.0 and have been told by IBM that i will need to upgrade to 4.3.3.0 in order to install Fast Connect which is that pain in the backside, do you know of any good url or faq's of where users have installed and implemented samba. the version I have downloaded are

Samba-2.0.7.0
Samba-2.2.0.0
Samba-2.2.1.1
Samba-2.2.3.a

The problem being which is the right version 4 oslevel 4.3.2.0 the above version are all 4 AIX, Victor I really need a good url that explains how configure samba.

can you help

I belive what you have downloaded is enough.

I have used 2.2 on AIX 433, but I remember that the 2.0.7 was indicated for AIX 432.

I don't know which applications you have installed on the risc, but I suggest to upgrade to AIX 433 and maintenance level 9 or 10. In such case you can install the last version of SAMBA. (ask me if you have questions about this upgrade)

The redbook that I had write, and "aixqueen" has referenced, is a good book to operate. However, if you want know more deep and conceptual informations about SAMBA you can consult samba.org or pubblications also on other platforms (as LINUX).

Then put the exe file in a empty temp directory: when you run it, it explodes themselves in files that you can use to install SAMBA by smit.
launch 2smitty install_latest" , put a dot in the path, enter and F4:
"freeware samba" will appear.

The installation goes under /usr/local/... and it does not invade the system. (it adds ports for smb daemons and for SWAT in /etc/inetd.conf)
(run a refresh -s inetd to tell to daemon to reload parameters). Samba does not start as a services ( nfs, lpd, ecc), but is controlled by superdaemon (inetd) as telnet or ftp.

I strongly suggest to use SWAT (uncomment its line in inetd.conf and refresh ...)
It is a special WEB server (it answers at port 901 instead 8080 or other)
From a browser on the risc or at your PC enter

Using SWAT, you can ignore, for the first times, the excact location of configuration files and you can see graphically which are the choices.

I suggest to create a share without security, try to browse it from a PC and after, olnly if you need, implement password mechanism. (Use NT or w2K for the test, they ask you the username/passwd when you click on the share; whit W95/8 you have to login before as the user that you have used on risc )
Remeber that every modes of authentications you use, (see book), you
have to create o use an AIX-user (dedicateted or not): the AIX server knows its user, SAMBA can only translate, using its tables, NT user in AIX user.
