I am looking to try and build an organogram (tree listing) of users under management, i would like the output to look similar to that found in TREE. The old dos based command.

The formatting if you do not know TREE was like so :

Drive
|
|-- Directory1
|-- Directory2
| |
| |-- Directory2.1
| |-- Directory2.2
|
|-- Directory3

et cetera.

Is there anyway that i could achieve this through HTML. I have tried using tables etcetera, but it looks dodgy, is there a proper way of doing it.

if tables look dodgy, maybe you could try using css, and positioning, there are padding properties that allows you to specify the width of the blank on the left - but i'm not that good on css so it's better to wait for a real expert ;-)
an other and easy and cross browser and even old browser compatible soltion (but not elegant !) is to use an 1 pixel image with the same color as the background of you page, and to set its width
