Hi all,

Can anyone direct me to a solution whereby there is a fault on a motherboard preventing the on board fan from working. Is it possibly to fit a fan on the motherboard which is powered by the usb 2.0 ports on the board?

It would help if you said what fan, and give us the model number and manufacturer of the board. Most boards today don't have a fan on the board, and if you are talking about a fan header for a case fan or the cpu fan, well, for a case fan, just connect it to the power supply with an adapter, for the cpu fan, there is no work around, as the rpm sensor is tied to the bios, and will keep the board from completing post to protect the board. Chipset fans, it's usually the fan that goes bad, and it will need to be replaced.

its unlikely the system fan is powered via USB, its normally a 3 or 4 pin header with a white connector on the board. Fans are easily purchased from a local electronic / pc hobbyist store or online. they come in sll shapes, and sizes, and speeds from 20mm up to 140mm and generally on the board are 12V
