Computer specs: 533 MHz, 128 MB RAM, Win ME. In switching to ME from Win 98, I had COM port problems for my modem, so I deleted the PCI modem from the Control Panel, removed it from the CPU, reinstalled the modem drivers and then reinstalled the modem in the CPU. All these steps are per the modem manufacturer's instructions. The computer was bootiong OK prior to this step. On restarting the computer,I hear the hard drives working, the red drive light on the CPU is on, but the computer fails to boot into windows. Additionally, the monitor light remains in standby and I cannot shut off the computer from the regular power switch on the front of the CPU. I can only shut it off from the rocker switch on the back of the CPU. It appears to me that the problem is of an electrical nature, perhaps a loose connection. Any suggestions of what to check. Thanks for your quick responses.

I would take the modem out and see if it will boot then. If it does uninstall the drivers for the modem and delete the modem out of device manager and try again. Check modem manufacturer website and see if they have updated drivers for ME. A+ MCP

I gently pushed in the video card and the computer now works well. Thanks all for your help.

for future reference.
you said you hit the power button and it didn't turn off, try holding the power switch for 3-5 sec. some power supplies require a time delay before it breaks the circuit.
