Failure detection in RSTP

Hi guys,

I have a problem with link failure detection in RSTP. From 802.1w I know that this is done either with infoWhile timer or portEnabled variable. While infoWhile seems to work quite intuitive, i have no idea how portEnabled is switched from TRUE to FALSE. How eactly are link failures detected in RSTP? If it not a problem, I would also like to know how things look with bridge failures.
