Is it possible to connect the e1 interface on the primary and failover using regular cable based failover to two different switches? If so, how do I handle the configuration if the switches have seperate ips?

Thanks a bunch!

The IP addreses on the switches are for managment purposes only. Remember the switch is a layer 2 device so it doesn't handle/inspect IP addresses only layer 2 (MAC) addresses. You need to configure separate VLANs on the 3550 switches, so in VLAN 1 you connect the e1 ports of both primary and failover units, then on VLAN 2 you connect both e0 ports and so on. The link below is an excellent guideline on failover:

Hey, thanks for the information.

It brought to an answer. I knew the PIX's would do the trick but wasn't sure if the switch would also.

Thanks a bunch!

One note would be to try to use your failover interface (if you are using failover LAN and not the serial cable) as a cross-over cable that isn't connected to your switches.
