when i do "show failover" :
This host: Primary - Active
Active time: 5490390 (sec)
Other host: Secondary - Standby (Failed)
Active time: 0 (sec)

other interface is normal(waiting) status
is it normal?
im not familiar with failover but from what i see i think something is wrong
what should i do?what should i check n how to fix it?
can anyone help me

thanks

This message tells you the secondary unit failed. Reload your secondary unit and sychronize both units by entering "write standby" on the primary. You should see the message "sync started" and "sync completed" on the console.
After that you should not see the failed state on the secondary.

A waiting state on the interface means the interface is not receiving the hello packets from the peer interface. Are you using a switch to connect the interfaces? If so, verify trunking and channeling are disabled. If it is a Cisco switch portfast should be enabled.
All active interfaces sould be normal. However you did not attach enough information. Hope this helps!

I have three unused interfaces on each of my PIXs that are not connected to anything. They have a waiting status next to them and therefore I believe my Standby shows failed. Am I correct? If so how can I get it out of the Failed status? My used interfaces say normal with no "waiting" next to them.

Thanks
robert

hi themut
thanks for the advice, it is working now after i reload the standby unit, but it goes to failed again after i do write standby, so i reload standby again and leave it as is :)
fine till now

hi yizhar,
im sure it is connected cos it was fine before, it happened after i add some new rule to the active unit and do "write mem"

hi RobG2001,
i think if your used interface shows normal without waiting staus, that would be a good sign too, cos i have mine now like that :)

I would make sure of a couple of things before accepting that it is 'ok'. First do a <sh ver> to make sure that both boxes are identical. All of the interfaces should not be in 'auto' mode ie set them too 100 full duplex if they are capable. Even Cisco admit problems with their auto sensing :p . Is the IOS the same on each box? Check your activation key, the secondary should be licensed for failover.

As you did not give too much detail out i apologise for being simplistic but, make sure your secondary is switched off, assign failover ip's on your primary, these are normally just the next IP inline ie Primary inside int 10.0.0.1 / failover inside int 10.0.0.2 Boot your secondary and it should automatically copy the config ovver.

Hope that helps!

hi Reaper36,
i did that and they are identical
i've add some new rule yesterday and do write mem again
so far so good no more failed status :)

thanks
