Hello,
I'm running a qmail server with several mail inboxes setup, on attemping to retrieve mail I am getting a persistent "Failed to connect to server mail.xxxxxxx.com" Nevertheless, 1 or 2 pieces of mail might come through intermittently. The mail, meanwhie is accumulating in the various Maildir/cur directories.

The
qmailctl stat
/service/qmail-send: up (pid 73073) 0 seconds
/service/qmail-send/log: up (pid 712) 150330 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd: up (pid 715) 150330 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd/log: up (pid 717) 150330 seconds
messages in queue: 2
messages in queue but not yet preprocessed: 0
/service/qmail-pop3d: up (pid 713) 150330 seconds
/service/qmail-pop3d/log: up (pid 714) 150330 seconds

Could someone recommend a good source that can provide trouble shooting guidance through this morass.

Thanks

/service/qmail-send: up (pid 73073) 0 seconds

is problematic, it should be up. That process is responsible for local delivery of mail and for outbound delivery to remote hosts. that may help some of your issues.

How are you connecting to pick up mail? IMAP or POP3?

I am currently using POP3 but am considering adding IMAP [horde]

How can I get /service/qmail-send >> up; attempting to start from /usr/var/qmail/bin/qmail-send >
"alert: cannot start: qmail-send is already running"

and what typically causes it to go down
(just want to know how to prevent it from going down)

Well, your status printout shows qmail-send is down...

commands you could try:

"killall qmail-send"
"svc -a /service/qmail-send"
"svc -d /service/qmail-send; svc -u /service/qmail-send"

if you see that the "qmailctl stat" still shows qmail-send as being down, then you need to take a strong look at your qmail-send log file to show what error messages reveal.

Thanks! and sorrry I had to be away last week

qmail-send is up but problem persists
[small]
qmailctl stat
/service/qmail-send: up (pid 66055) 3059 seconds
/service/qmail-send/log: up (pid 88610) 611155 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd: up (pid 88613) 611155 seconds
/service/qmail-smtpd/log: up (pid 88614) 611155 seconds
messages in queue: 2
messages in queue but not yet preprocessed: 0
/service/qmail-pop3d: up (pid 88617) 611155 seconds
/service/qmail-pop3d/log: up (pid 88618) 611155 seconds
[/small]

Now there is something odd looking about my /service/qmail-send/log directory structure
[small]
ls -l /service/qmail-send/log
total 10
drwxr-xr-x 4 root qmail 512 Jun 10 12:42 ./
drwxr-xr-x 4 root qmail 512 Jun 16 00:26 ../
drwxr-xr-x 3 qmaill qmail 512 Jun 17 19:58 main/
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root qmail 89 Jun 17 21:24 run*
drwx------ 2 root qmail 512 Oct 13 00:57 supervise/
[/small]
there doesn't seem to be a log file located there, or am I missing something? and if there is one, which of these is it, at least it should tell something about what is going on
[small]
ls -R /service/qmail-send/log
./ ../ main/ run* supervise/

/service/qmail-send/log/main:
./ lock
../ main/
@40000000485879e33a6ae32c.s* state
current*

/service/qmail-send/log/main/main:
./ ../ current lock state

/service/qmail-send/log/supervise:
./ control| ok|
../ lock status
[/small]

Thanks

Why does your display of file "run" have an asterisk in the filename?

"run*"

The actual location of the log file is specified in the "log/run" script... Often, but not by specific rule, the logs are kept in

/var/log/qmail/[service]/

Again, the file /service/qmail-send/log/run will tell you your log location.
