We have had a hardware failure on a SQL server 2005 box. We back up the box on Backup Exec 11D, but unfortunately didn't know to create a .bak file within SQL before the failure. We have found another server running SQL 2005 - is it possible to recover from tape? Any suggestions honestly appreciated.

Probably not. SQL Server locks the database files while it is running so other process can't access the database files, this includes the backup software.

You can check the backup and see if the mdf and ldf files exists on the backup. If they do exist you can try and restore them, then attach the database to the SQL Server and see if it is able to recover the database.

The odds are against you though.
