I've tried using System Restore to bring my computer from a date earlier in the week. The restore gets to 80% then fails out. I tried this twice with the same result. Is it still possible for me to recover my system. I have software install that I don't have the orginal CD so I don't want to do a format reinstall. Please help!!!!!!!!

You can attempt a repair install...

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

You should have an image backup of your system & apps on another HD as I assume you do not currently...Drives are reasonable enough when compared to losing & the cost of applications & data.

And obviously you should try picking a different date to restore to. See if it works with a slightly older version.

Start your computer in Safe Mode, no networking.

NOTE : You must log on as the administrator or a user that has administrator rights.

Start, Run, CMD\

c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Follow the instructions on the screen to begin restoring your computer.

Or just try the Safe Mode wizard option for System Restore.

System Restore will not be able to restore your system to any point (or time) where your computer configuration is/was faulty. It can only restore to a fault free configuration.

Do something to avoid this situation in the future by looking at a reliable backup regime.

Most reputable software companies should have a policy for replacing damaged or lost CD's for a small cost.
