I have a 2 node cluster and I found that I can move the Cluster resource to node A but I cannot move the application resource to Node A. It just goes there and then goes back to Node B.

I found that the problem is the Network Name as it fails with the following error in Event Log

Event ID 1196

The required registration of the DNS name(s) associated with Cluster resource NetworkName failed for the following reason

A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host.

Not sure what this means exactly, I can ping the DNS server from Node A and the resources were on Node A up until last week. Both Node A and B are built identically with the same DNS servers.

Any suggestions on where to look will be grateful.

check that the wins and dns addresses on the node that is failing is working correctly.

Basically the node registers the dns record when cluster name resource starts up, either dns registration of records isn't working or the existing record in dns isn't unregistering. It could be something simple like the zone name is wrong or the existing record is static or permissions on dns is wrong.

You can if you like take the group offline, fail them to the other node and start the resources one at a time manually to verify what is failing

Theres something going on with node 1, when I did ipconfig /registerdns that also failed with event id 11160.

The resources work fine on node 1 when I uncheck DNS registration must suceed which makes sense.

try deleting the dns record manually and seeing if it can reregister afterwards. And check that dns setting on the hosts are configured the same.
