Matt,

What did you use to study?

Do you have a home router lab?

What areas on the test did you do poorly on?

What is your background in networking?

This has been covered a lot over the past few weeks and tons of hands on with your own home lab is one of the best ways to learn CCNA.

You can get 3 Cisco 2500 routers with max DRAM and FLASH (16/16) on eBay for GREAT prices now!

I have always said to have 2 good CCNA books - 1 Cisco Press and the other the Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd L. (5th edition). As you read the books and they talk about something - TRY IT IN YOUR LAB.

The lab I use when I study for CCNA has 5 router, 2 switches and 3 hubs with 5 PCs hanging off each switch or hub - I can do networking from end to end so that I understand a concept inside and out! If they have a lab to set up an ACL so that a server can not be accessed from a workstation - I can set it up and do it and see that it WORKS!!

You do not need 5 routers but 3 routers and a switch or 2 and a few old PCs will do the trick.

Hope this helps!

Hi,

I have Sybex CCNA Study Guide by Todd L. (5th edition) think its a great book but i think there is just too much to take in, i work as a tech support engineer if a big IT company but only touch the Cisco stuff once a week if i am lucky, i have access to as much kit as i like but my currently my lab is 3 x 2950, 3 x 3600 routers and 5 pc's. i dont believe that i have a problem with doing any of the commands or understanding routing and switching etc but i struggle to take in all the theory ie OSI layers, IP packet headers, etc

Any Books i could read up to help this would be great, i have put in for my exam again next friday

Thanks

Matt

Matt,

If you are having trouble with basic networking concepts such as the OSI model and IP packets etc. then get a very basic networking book like "Networking for Dummies" - I am not poking fun - they tend to be very easy reads and cover basic stuff very well!!

Everytime I start a new course I read the "Dummies" book first - such as "Photoshop for Dummies" or "VB for Dummies", I even read the "CCNA for Dummies" and "Cisco for Dummies" back in 1999 when I first got into all of this!

I think it can be the fastest and easiest way to get a good overall picture of a subject without putting lots of time in.

Hope this helps!

I'd have to agree on the Dummies series. They are an excellent starting point. For OSI, I have a copy of Firewalls for dummies that I thought did an amazing job of explaining the OSI model.

Another good book by Todd Lammle is the CCNA Fast Pass book:

Really helped me get through VLSM better.
