My netbackup 4.5 runs a full backup every Friday 8pm to Sunday 6pm. M - Thu runs a cum incr.

This weekend, the full backup failed at 95%. Few days later, User called and requested a file restore from a friday nihgt's tape.

I thought Monday cum incr would backup every files since the successful full backup, but it did not.

Now, can i retrieve data from that failed friday full backup tapes.
I tried phase 1 import and it said bad header. It just simple can not be read.

I believed the failed full backup reset the archive bits on those files that had been backed up to tapes. Therefore, the Monday's night cum inc backup did not backup all the files since succcessful full backup.

Please help.

When the FULL backup failed at 95% the entire image was made invalid.
The 95% that completed was expired and thus did not constitute as a FULL backup.
Mondays incremental would go back to the previous week's FULL backup.
The Friday night previous to the last Friday and build the backup list.

I have seen a partial backup image restored using the tar command.
But only if the tape had not been written to after the failure.
And this would be outside of VERITAS NetBackup.

How do I restore a tape using just the "tar" command?

How was the full backup this week?

It finished successfully.

The "Tar" command, is it a Unix command?
My setup is Windows2k.

I really want to be able to retrieve data or at least build the catalog for those failed backups.
It is very critical for me to make sure the backup did not reset the archive bit and skipped those files in the next cum incr backup. That mean Friday's files would be gone forever.

Also, Vault. What kind of benefit can I by using it?
Any idea?

Thanks for your tips.

The tar command is used in windows too.
It is located in ...\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\tar32.exe

In theory, the archive bits are suppose to be cleared AFTER the backup is successfully completed with a status 0 or 1.
I am not sure how to check when that is done.
But. Here is a technote explaining how to do it.

How to make sure that VERITAS NetBackup (tm) is resetting the archive bit on files after they are backed up

Vaulting...
I am a firm believer that the vault option is well worth the price tag.
Yes, vaulting can be done with homegrown scripting.
And yes, there are some good scripts available from USERS.
but I want VERITAS support and reliability for my DR
thats my opinion

Thanks for the info.
I will try that Tar32.exe command. Hopefully, I can retrieve files off those tapes.
