Hello everyone,
Is anyone having problems faxing using IP trunking. I have had problems ever since I upgraded to 7.1.3.4. I have some faxes that go through just fine and some that give back a "poor line condition" error, mostly on long distance faxes. Some LD's go through just fine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,

Do you have compression on your IP trunk ?

Now, it's about French users too !!!

Try to avoid faxing over IP trunks. First of all if system turns on G.729 codec (compressin enabled) it will not go throug at all. G.711 will work in case of solid rock stable link without any or very minor jitter. There is the T.38 standard designed for faxing over IP but Mitel doesn't support it. Once again, try to avoid faxing over IP. Consider another solution such as separate FAX gateway,T.37 email fax. We are running T.37 Fax gateway over Cisco gateway with a PRI connected to it.

No compression turned on.
I would like to avoid faxing all together but that's not possible. I have an old p-node attached to the 3300 at one of our campuses for the analog lines, since we upgraded to 7.1 I've had problems, wonder if it could be periphral switch controller card.
Thanks for the help so far.

The 3300 doesn't support Fax over normal IP trunking.
The SIP Trunking available for software 7.1+ supports FAX calls over G.711. Attempts to switch to
T.38 are rejected, and the call continues as G.711. It's recommended that FAX machines be connected
locally or through TDM to the 3300 ICP that is
connected to the Service Provider through SIP trunks.

The SIP Satellite Office Solution configuration support
FAX calls over T.38. This solution uses a third party FXS/FXO gateway in order to connect the faxes.
I've got 3300 (x25) with sx2K (x3) alongside 55+ satalite fax solutions with multitech gateways.unfortunately, I've been experiencing a lot of intermittent faults with faxes due to the nature of faxing over IP. I was told that it has to be done over a near perfect network any loss of packets over 2% more or less tends to invoke the fax failing.

One of two ways I know to support faxing:

1. Multi-Tech VOIPs support T.38 and you can just plug the fax machine into the back of their box.

2. They also have a fax server that works with the SX & 3300

Thanks everyone for all the info. Sounds like I will have to spend some cash.

MITEL will support T38 soon...in 8.1

V8.0 is annouced Q1 2007 (Aroound April)

SO have to wait a bit

Now, it's about French users too !!!

Mitel just posted a tech bulletin on this issue today, there's an RTC command used to turn off the fax tone auto-sensing, which apparently is the root of the problem. This is also fixed in 7.1UR2, due to be GA in March.

Thanks Lundah. I am going now to try this on one of my switches. I will post results.

I turned off in 3 of my switches today and now faxes go through with no problem.
Thanks Lundah

Good to hear, I have the same issues and we've been scrambling looking for a fix.
