Can someone please let me know what is required to fade an image into transparent. Although it looks like a need the gradient tool, I cannot get it to do this?

You need to add a layer mask first then using the gradient tool. The button for adding a mask is at the bottom of the layers palette. Hold you mouse over the icons till you find it - I can't remember which one it is exactly without seeing it.

Hope this helps!

Many Thanks. It works perfectly

I tried to follow the above instructions, but couldn't make any sense out of them at my proficiency level.

Luckily for me, I stumbled across another way.

1. Select the part of the image you want to fade
2. In the Layers window, click the circle at the bottom that is half black and half white then select Gradient.

From there it should be easy to figure out if I did.
