I'm using a graphic designer to lay out a catalog in InDesign. Our current layout uses 8.5 x 11 landscape format and we want to change to a booklet-style 5.5 (w) x 8.5 (h)with the same information "flowing" across facing pages. The designer tells me that this will mess up the indexing of pages and make future modifications difficult. Is that right? It sems to me this would be a fairly basic requirement of a publishing software package. What are my options?

Thanks

He's right, you will have problems.

It all goes with the printing and binding. The pages will not come out right.

Here would be a typical print order for a folded and bound 16 page booklet. Cover and back cover (page1 &16) would be printed on one side of the first piece of paper, pages 2 & 15 on the reverse side. The next piece of paper would have pages 3 & 14 on one side and pages 4 & 13 on the reverse. If you want the content to flow across the pages, things will get messed. The pagination would get messed up.

You could redesign the booklet in Indesign, or other page layout app, with each page 5.5 X 8.25 facing with zero inside margin and the proper bleed. if necessary. The booklet could then be laid out for proper pagination, etc. This is basiclly a complete redo and COST will be a factor.
