Facebook Jobs Board--Please, Zuckerberg, Don't Do This! 7

I HATE, HATE, HATE this idea. I do not mix my work life and my Facebook life. I have no desire to mix them. And I keep them separate for obvious reasons. Employers only need to know that I do my job. They do not need to know that I went to a play tonight. They do not need to know that I am going to a comedy show tomorrow night. They do not need to know who got birthday wishes from me and who did not. Bottom line, anything your employer knows about you can and will be used against you.

I do not talk about religion or politics in my workplace. I do talk about those things on Facebook. My employer does not need to know what I say and do not say about these things.

I do not friend my current co-workers on Facebook. I have friended past co-workers. I do not mention any employers on Facebook and have no desire to do so. I do not show my Facebook to my current co-workers. I have even blocked some of my co-workers because I do not want them to find me.

If this happens (and I suspect Zuckerbeg will do it because he loves to annoy people), what are you going to do? I may end up creating a professional Facebook profile and keep the two profiles totally separate. I sincerely hope that everyone on Facebook will revolt against this.

Let's get the revolt started now. Facebook is not a jobs site. I do not treat it as one. I do not want it to become one.

All the reasons you mention are why I do NOT have a Farsebook account.

==> My employer does not need to know what I say and do not say about these things.
Whether your employer needs to know is largely irrelevant. If your employer wants to know what you say on Facebook, (s)he probably already does. Facebook is public. If you don't want your employer, or any person on the street, to know what you say about specific topics, then don't talk about those topics in public.

I don't say anything on Facebook, or Tek-Tips for that matter, I wouldn't say to anyone in a public environment or face to face. I think it's naive to think that anonymity or privacy exist outside of dedicated secure channels.

I had a Facebook account about four years ago for a while. The inane drivel posted by my "friends" drove me to distraction. Aside from that I found no use for the thing so I quit.

My only "social networking" is now face-to-face or on the phone to real friends.

Linkedin is useful for job postings and so-on, but some members even use this for gibberish. For example, a former connection used Linkedin to praise the achievements of his body-building buddies.

Actually it's very easy for them to not know. You can block someone on Facebook. When you do, you are totally invisible to them. There are also different levels of privacy settings.

I use an alias on tek-tips that I do not use anywhere else.

I do have a linkedin account. It's never pretended to be anything that is not job related.

I have a Faceboobk acccount and the majority of my colleagues are friends there too as well as in the real world.

But then as CC so wisely says - I say nothing that I weouldn't say in any public arena.

I wouldn't want to look for jobs there. that is what LinkedIn is for!

I'm also on the "Big Three" - Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

I also don't like the idea of job-related stuff on Facebook. While I am Facebook friends with many of my former co-workers (I just started a new job last week), and also have some of them as connections on LinkedIn, I never mix the two. On LinkedIn, I'm all business, and that's the way it should be. I don't post anything about the goings-on at anyplace I may have worked, aside from generalities that everyone can relate to (and things that are in the news anyway). However, I can be somewhat outspoken on some issues (if you are a FB friend of mine, or follow me on Twitter, you know what I'm talking about). I respect other people's opinions, however, and I would not un-friend someone just because we differ on some issue.

Anything I post to Twitter gets posted to my Facebook timeline as well (but not retweets).

There are some people that post borderline disparaging remarks about there employers on Facebook, however, and that makes me cringe. Don't get me wrong; I'm all for freedom of speech. But remember that just because you can say something in a public forum, doesn't mean you should.

If you are on facebook, don't whine about your data being public. That is the whole idea of facebook, isn't it?

Hey - it has been reported that Mr. Zuckerberg has lost $9 Billion since the Facebook IPO.
He needs to try and recover the Stock by "any means necessary".

I personally have no social media accounts at all: wouldn't have the time to keep them up.

For that matter, who has time to post on Tek-Tips, let alone Facebook?

With business clients like mine, you'd be better off herding cats.

Well, you and I, for starters.
