I have a RS/6000 F-50 with a PCI nic installed on it running aix 4.3.3. I can ping myself via IP or hostname, but i cant ping anything on the network. I show the system as being active on the port.
Any help would be creatly appreciated.
thanks

You might need to set your default gateway. To check:

netstat -rn | grep default

If you get no output, or the default gateway address is the F-50's address, then:

/usr/sbin/route add default <gateway IP address>

I checked that it is setup for the correct default gateway and has the correct subnet mask for the network.

Does your network equipment have ICMP Echo/Reply forwarding disabled?

Can you ping the F-50 from elsewhere on the network?

I am not sure about the ICMP or how to check that...I am a HP-UX guy sorry....no I cant ping the F-50 from elsewhere.
Thanks for the help

ICMP Echo/Reply are the packets that make up a ping.

Try a traceroute to the host you want to ping:

/usr/bin/traceroute <host>

might yield some clues.

Make sure the NIC on the RS/6000 is set for a specific media speed, not auto_negotiate.

traceroute just came back with alot of 1****, 2**** and that was it...no errors or anything....the card is set to 100 full, and the lights on the nic are on.

(in no particular order)

If you can, move a device (desktop computer, maybe) that you know can talk to the network to the port that the F-50 is on, and see if it still works.

Are the lights on the NIC and the switch/router showing activity?

Have you tried flushing the route table? You'll have to add the default gateway back in afterwards.

Thanks for all your help the final problem was that the subnet was available on that server farm and had to be moved...not that anyone told me that untill now...LOL...thanks for everyones help..
